‘I paint to create a place of freedom in which images and ideas can coexist and collide—strange, off-kilter portals and landscapes that envelop and overwhelm the viewer.’

Hannah Thomas (b.1973, Reading, UK) is a painter currently based in Wiltshire whose bold paintings seduce and overwhelm the viewer with evocative shapes and motifs emerging from colourful, fractured landscapes.  They draw heavily on the dominance of atmosphere in art and reference the work of David Lynch – his macabre and unsettling environments – and the anatomical elements and distortions in Francis Bacon’s paintings.

The landscapes have a rhythmical movement, alluding to the importance of music in the painting process and which provide a sweep for the eye to follow visually.   The variety of ways she applies the paint – both thick dry brush work as well as rubbing back inks to reveal hidden layers and expose subdued base colours – help to provide depth to the environments she creates.  Nature in her horror and wonder is laid bare here, and celebrated.  In it, the artist feels humanity can find a more honest connection to the natural world, with all its fecundity, parasitism, decay and predation comfortably sitting alongside all its great beauty.

Hannah has accepted a place on MA in Painting at Royal College of Art, starting in September 2026. She recently held a studio auction to raise funds in preparation for this. Following on from this, any serious offers for work will be considered, please email.
